CHILD REARING & the MORAL COMPASS

CHILD REARING and the MORAL COMPASS Parents everywhere are concerned about raising their children well. Qatari parents, religious or not, are no exception. Because Islam is based on a moral code, even the irreligious often want to teach their children religious values. . Each family is different. Some parents take extreme measures to protect their children from evil, fearing their children will be exposed to too many damaging influences at too young an age. One such family only allows their children to interact with extended family or the hired nanny so their children internalize family behaviors and culture. Another parent rarely allows…

SINGING SAND DUNES

Many think the ocean is captivating. But the desert can have its own quixotic beauty: in some places, sands can create a melodious roar described as a symphony. Traveller Marco Polo said it created “the sounds of all kinds of musical instruments,” named by others as the combination of a double bass, trombone, didgeridoo and low-flying airplane. Qatar contains one of about 30 singing sand dunes on Earth. The singing sound is created by wind passing over dunes, or by walking in the sand. The grains at singing sand dunes are small and round and similar in diameter, and contain…

BROADCASTING THE MESSAGE

Image: Creative Commons

Qatar’s capital city of Doha is headquarters to major news and current affair broadcaster Al Jazeera. Initially launched as a satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has expanded to include the internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages. As of 2007, the Arabic Al Jazeera channel claimed an estimated 40 to 50 million viewers, while Al Jazeera English estimated 100 million households. Al Jazeera has proven willing to broadcast dissenting views—or at least walk the fine line between objectivity and audience appeal—regarding coverage of news events, and even issues of morality and religion. While this has created great controversy, Al Jazeera…

THE QATAR FLAG

qatar flag

Qatar’s flag is maroon with a broad white jagged band on the hoist side. White symbolizes peace. Maroon symbolizes blood shed during wars. The nine-point serrated line indicates Qatar is the 9th member of the “reconciled Emirates” since the Qatari-British treaty in 1916. Legend says Qatar’s flag was once red. When a certain dye was used in making the original flag, it was left in the sun to dry, and the hot Gulf sun faded the color to maroon. The color was regarded as more beautiful and is now called “Qatar Red”. Red is the most popular color used in…

ACCESS, GOSPEL MATERIALS, & OBEDIENT BELIEVERS

Access is generally the greatest challenge in sharing the Gospel and planting the Church in Qatar. Thankfully, across the Arab world, we can send materials to places where we can’t always send people. The Bible is available in several versions in Arabic. Anti-proselytism laws cannot prevent gospel radio, TV, and Christian websites from penetrating the homes and hearts of those living in Qatar. Many Arabic-language websites, chat rooms and programs seem to have a powerful effect. We believe in the transformative power of the Scriptures. We believe in the power of God to illuminate meaning and create understanding, whether or…

ISAIAH 55:8-9

‘“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.     “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.  For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,     so my ways are higher than your ways     and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.’ Pray that the Lord’s ways would prevail in Qatar. Pray that Christians in Qatar would immediately obey the Holy Spirit’s promptings.

#PrayForHajj

We’re following Prayercast with their #PrayForHajj updates–you should too! . Day 1 of the Hajj starts tomorrow. 2-3 million Muslims will cleanse themselves and put on a white pilgrim garment before they head towards the Ka’aba for their first sighting (climax of a Muslim’s spiritual life). We pray that as they reach this sacred site they would sense a deep longing for something more, setting them out on a new pilgrimage in search of their Savior, Jesus. ~
