MAKING A MARK

No matter the historical era, whether or not they believe in life after death, people want to leave a legacy, to be known for something after they’ve left this world.

For being one of the smallest and richest countries in the world, Qatar holds some unfortunate distinctions. Did you know…

  • Qatar possesses the second largest government debt in the region.
  • With the discovery of natural gas and oil, Qatar’s culture and diversity changed rapidly.
  • Qatar has some of the highest levels of obesity and diabetes worldwide.
  • Qataris’ water consumption is thought to be the highest in the world, about 114 gallons of water per person per day. (Conversely, Qatar’s foreign residents average 40 gallons of water each day.)
  • Qatar has the highest per capita carbon footprint. Citizens of oil-rich Middle East & North African countries create 2 to 10 times the amount of emissions of the typical global citizen, according to a UK-based environmental organization.

  • Qatar and its residents would likely not be proud of most of these distinctions. Reversing most of these issues would take more than desire or education—in fact, it would probably require a miracle.

Do we pray like we believe Jesus has the power to transform these issues?

Peruse the profiles, and pray for the people these stories represent. God, we ask you to convict us, and the national and foreign residents of Qatar, of living for ourselves. Turn our eyes toward You. Reveal to us the things we can do to make a positive lasting—eternal—impact on our world.
